Backdrop

For the band's logo being in large behind the band in the video I will use Microsoft Word to enlarge the font and create a banner for this. I will then dress the stage on Friday after school in preparation for Sundays filming. As I cannot attend the shoot - I will give the plan of the set to one of my peers.

Idea For Backdrop

When researching local bands, I came across a similar band, Boxeddy.
The stage in this picture is plain, yet with the use of lighting it looks interesting. The band's name at the back of the stage stands out and promotes the band even more. The band are also casually dressed (which is what Group Therapy want too).

So my idea for the design of the set for the music video is plain black or white backdrop with Group Therapy's logo printed in large font at the back of the stage, above their heads - to add emphasis to the promotion of the band.
The band will be positioned similar to the band in the picture and bright coloured lights will be used to make the video visually interesting.

'Pub Rock'

When researching the target audience - the pub scene - I came across 'Pub Rock' which I believe our band has some elements of.
The rock music genre, 'Pub Rock', developed in the mid 1970', where bands would perform live in small local venues and pubs. Dress style of the band was based around denim and plaid shirts, tatty jeans and droopy hair. Most of the venues were in large Victorian pubs "north of Regents Park" where there were plenty of suitable pubs. One of the most notable venues was the Hope and Anchor pub on Islington's Upper Street, still a venue. These bands included Kilburn & The High Roads and Ducks Deluxe.
The 'Pub Rock' was taken over by the Punk scene later on in the 1970's - but I believe that this genre still has a big influence on bands today, especially local bands who enjoy performing in small, pub venues.

Location and Set Design

As we are not using the Peppercorns stage as the set for the music video, we are using the school hall.
I went and looked at the school hall yesterday with Heidi to try and think of some ideas for the design of the set, as with limited time and no budget, this is tricky.
The backdrop on the stage already is a Top of the Pops one, with music related objects and pictures on it. There is also a 1920's black and white backdrop.
But for our music video, I think a plain backdrop would be best as the band want to sell themselves to the pub scene – so simply presenting themselves performing – and have the band look cool and make them stand out against a plain background.
I have looked into renting a backdrop for the filming, but this is expensive and probably not possible.

Location and Filming

Originally, the location for our music video was Peppercorns in St Neots, but as we were not able to hire this out, we are going to use the school hall. This does make it easier as I cannot attend the video shoot as I have to go up to Manchester that weekend, due to personal reasons (which I cannot rearrange). So on the Friday before the filming I can set up the stage for the video shoot, ready for the band to perform on the Sunday (23rd of January).

Similar Band: Hard Rain

Hard Rain is a pub band from the Norfolk area. They usually play Bob Dylan songs, but play other songs from bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and artists such as Amy Whinehouse. The band consists of 6 members, 5 men and 1 woman.
This band is very similar to Group Therapy as their target audience is similar and so is the choice of songs and style.
As you can see in the picture below, the band look professional, yet casual in their attire. The jeans and casual shirt work well together and portray an image which I think Group Therapy would want to convey.

Costume Idea 2

As the band do not like the previous costume for the music video, I have suggested shirt, jeans and casual shoes such as trainers, as the band will still appeal to the wedding audience and the pub audience and it has both smart and casual. Below is an idea of what it will look like.

Email to the band

Original Music Video and Lyrics

You've done it all, you've broken every code
And pulled the rebel to the floor
You spoilt the game, no matter what you say
For only metal - what a bore!
Blue eyes, blue eyes, how come you tell so many lies?

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, run on wild

There's nothing left, all gone and run away
Maybe you'll tarry for a while
It's just a test, a game for us to play
Win or lose, it's hard to smile
Resist, resist, it's from yourself you have to hide

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, run on wild

There ain't no more, you've taken everything
From my believe in Mother Earth
How can you ignore my faith in everything
When I know what Faith is and what it's worth
Away, away, and don't say maybe you'll try

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, run on wild.

Costume for Music Video

I believe the band would look good in all black - black shirt, black trousers and black shoes. Also having discussed this with the band, this is also the usual costume they wear when performing. All of the band members wearing white ties, and the lead singer should wear a coloured tie of his choice.
This way the band will look smart and like a group - but still have individual identity.

Logo

I have decided on the logo below to represent the band as it is plain and simple, yet stands out to grab the audience’s attention, it is neither too complicated or un-interesting. It is clean and professional looking and will appeal to the audience which the band is trying to appeal to.

Logo Ideas

I researched 'Group Therapy' on Google, to try and get an idea of the sort of symbols used and which relate to 'Group Therapy', but the images didn't fit with the bands image and were not suitable. So instead, I decided to use a simpler font logo which stands out and can easily be placed on other products for the band.
Below is a selection of fonts which I believe are suited for the band and are simple, but will make the band stand out.

These six fonts, I believe make the bands' logo individual and would fit what the band is and would be appropriate.
Out of the six logos, I think that the third and fourth logos are the best and would be a great logo for the band.

I used the site : http://www.dafont.com/ to get the logo for the band.

The Original Music Viedo, 'Come Up And See Me' - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebels

The style of the band in the video and the set is very colourful and bright, but challenges the conventions for the pop/rock genre. The costumes of the band members are shown below.

Ofcourse the clothing is dated as the video is from the 1970's, but the costume is colourful and quirky and does in some ways portray the conventions of pop- as the colours are the primary colours, but this is not so much rock.
The setting of the video is on a stage with bright colours, to make the band stand out and look 'cool' - this could be a similar setting to Group Therapy's video, with use of bright colours to make the band stand out.

The setting is quite child like as there is block colours and blocks which are placed around the stage. I believe this makes it visually appealing to all ages. The simple set also focuses the attention on the band members. I think this is important as it shows the audience the band memebers as a group and individually.

Song Choice

The song choice the band has made is 'Come Up And See Me', originally sung by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel in 1975. The song was also written by Steve Harley and included on the album 'The Best Years Of Our Lives'. The song is of a pop/rock genre.
Many covers of this song have been done, including one by Suzie Quatro in 1976, Duran Duran's live cover in 1984 and Erasure's cover in 2003.
The song, 'Come Up And See Me' was Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel's biggest selling hit and sold over one million copies world wide.
The song has also been used in on many film soundtracks, including; The Full Monty (1997), Saving Grace (2000) and Blackball (2003). It has also been used on television adverts for Marks and Spencers and Carlsburg.

Similar Band and Style

The Twentysomethings are one of the top party and wedding bands. They have performed to top celebrities such as Ben Fogel, Sir Paul McCartney and even royalty, Prince William and Harry. Their image and clothing is similar to Group Therapy.

The shirts, ties and trousers create a proffessional and smart look for the band, and this would be an ideal look for Group Therapy as it would give the impression they would wish to give, and also appeal to the correct target audience; pub-goers and couples who wish to get married.
